Remote Sensing of Land (RSL) group at VTT works on application of remote sensing with special focus on forestry at a variety of scales, from local to global. Among more theoretical developments, the group operates the Forest Thematic Exploitation Platform (f-tep.com), a one-stop shop for remote sensing data an applications in forestry, initiated by the European Space Agency. Other research at RSL targets the use of AI algorithms in forest variable and biomass estimation from Earth observation data, combining radar and optical remote sensing data, and development of physically-based (i.e., based on the radiative transfer equation) forest reflectance models.

We are seeking for a researcher trainee /M.Sc. thesis student / PhD student, or a postdoctoral researcher (senior scientist) in the area of land remote sensing in the Big Data Industrial Applications team of VTT.
We expect you to have
The required technical competences and skills include:
• Basic background in optical remote sensing (Earth Observation) or radiative transfer
• Good mathematical skills: ability to understand the language and methods of mathematical analysis
• Algorithmic thinking and basic (scientific) programming skills, preferably in the Python programming language
• Ability to work independently and publish results.
Non-technical experience and skills:
• Good command of English, written and spoken
• Good networking skills
You have an inquisitive attitude and you enjoy working in a multidisciplinary research environment. You are able to deliver results according to schedule and take responsibility of your actions. You are a problem solver with scientific curiosity and proactive attitude. Successful candidate(s) also have the capability to reorient themselves fast to new, emerging research problems or to customer needs showing flexibility in our dynamic environment. As a person, you are a team player with excellent communication skills.
